How to Change and Upgrade Fuel Filter On 6.7 Powerstroke

As a fuel filter is very effective at stopping harmful elements from entering the engine, it takes a heavy toll.

Thus, 6.7L Powerstroke owners require to change this part more frequently than other parts of the engine. You can either do it by yourself or hire a mechanic to do it.

In this article, I have explained how to change and upgrade fuel filter on 6.7 Powerstroke engine so that you can save a lot of money on labor costs. Also, you will find the best product deal on the market. Let’s get started.

How Do I Know My Fuel Filter On 6.7 Powerstroke Is Bad?

Knowing when your fuel filter on 6.7 Powerstroke has gone bad or clogged can be a huge advantage. Most of the modern trucks come with a filter rated between 10 and 30 microns.

As it is supposed to catch large particles in the fuel, the filter is meant to be clogged at some point. Here are some of the symptoms by which you can tell when the time is right to replace the existing one.

1. Poor Overall Engine Performance

When the filter gets jammed or clogged, it can’t pass enough fuel to the engine. Thus, your 6.7 Powerstroke can show random hesitation, surging, or sputtering.

You may not realize or notice anything like that at the beginning of the problem. After pressing the gas pedal for quick acceleration, the engine may show these symptoms.

2. Rough or Hard Starting

A completely blocked fuel filter won’t let your truck start. But partially clogged ones make it hard starting the engine. It happens due to erratic oil flow which causes long cranking.

3. Stalling

Experiencing stalling while driving occurs due to various reasons where a clogged fuel filter is one. Based on the severity of the clog, the truck ends up with a noticeable loss of power. And, it worsens while accelerating.

4. Bumpy Idling

Getting random misfires or rough idle is another obvious symptom of knowing the time for replacing the fuel filter on your 6.7 Powerstroke engine.

5. Seeing Engine Light Turned On

The “check engine” in your truck indicates lots of different problems that happen with the engine. And, the list of issues includes a bad fuel filter too.

If you see that the warning light is turned on, don’t forget to check the condition of the fuel filter while checking other components of the engine.

Here, using an OBD2 scanner, one can easily read the code. This way, you won’t have to beat around the bush trying to figure out where the problem is.

When Should I Change Fuel Filter on 6.7 Powerstroke?

I have already told you the symptoms of a bad fuel filter. And, that is when you have to replace the old one.

Even if you don’t get any problems, there is a recommended time for replacing the filter.

According to the manufacturer, it is better to change the oil filter once every 13000 to 15000 miles.

As the average driving distance of a US driver is 13000 miles a year, I can safely say that change the filter every year.

How Much Does It Cost to Change Fuel Filters on 6.7 Powerstroke?

First of all, let me talk about the filter price. I have found one on Amazon manufactured by Motorcraft and perfectly suitable for 6.7 Powerstroke engines.

It costs slightly above 50 dollars which is not that much compared to some other competitor models. It is equipped with leading-edge technologies to support the demand for the latest truck models from Ford.

After that, you have to add the labor cost. In total, you can safely assume that replacing a fuel filter should not cost more than $150. Take the schedule of your mechanic, and do the task without delay.

How Hard It Is Replace the Fuel Filter On 6.7 Powerstroke?

You must understand that one can easily replace the fuel filter without taking any expert help saving lots of money.

Those who don’t have the basic knowledge about diesel engines, necessary tools, or time should let a mechanic do the job for them.

I would say that it is not very difficult to remove the old fuel filter and install a new one. Below, I have described the steps to do the task in your garage.

How Do You Remove A Fuel Filter From a 6.7 Powerstroke?

Here, I am not only going to describe the steps to remove the fuel filter but also install a new one on a 6.7 Powerstroke diesel engine.

Before you begin, it is a must to arrange a few things. Order a new fuel filter kit, paper towels, a bucket for catching dripping oil, and a leak-proof container to carry the old filter.

Also, don’t forget to get a 36mm socket, a 6mm Allen wrench, Turkey Baster, and a half-inch drive ratchet. These are necessary for removing the old filter and installing the new one.

  • First of all, you have to take safety measures before beginning the process. Here, make sure that the ignition is off and place the drain pan in the right place. What I mean by saying the right place is the fuel separator filter housing.
  • Secondly, loosen the drain valve so that oil can be drained. Once you have confirmed that there is no fuel left, retighten the valve.
  • Thirdly, locate the fuel filter’s mounting bolts and remove them using the socket wrench.
  • Remove the housing and clean any type of dirt inside it. Don’t skip this part because you will have to do the cleaning eventually.
  • Then, take out the old filter element and housing seal so that you can put the newly bought one.
  • After replacing the fuel filter, you have to repeat the steps in reverse order.
  • Finally, start the engine, let it run for 30 seconds, and turn it off. Do the cycle 3 times to let the fuel pump prime the whole system.

Pro Tip: If you notice that the truck is still not starting or stumbling after the last step, you will have to repeat the priming procedure once again.

Although I have tried to explain the steps as simply as possible, some of you may not feel confident enough yet. That is why I am suggesting a YouTube video to have a better understanding.

Conclusion

Knowing how to change and upgrade fuel filter on 6.7 Powerstroke Ford engine often comes in handy.

But taking good care of the engine and cleaning the system from time to time, you won’t have to replace this part too often.

Also, it will help run the engine smoothly improving the overall performance.
