Common 5R110W Transmission Problems: (Troubleshoot & Fix)

It can be a scary experience when your car starts to have transmission problems. 5R110W transmission problems are pretty common for Ford F250 and Ford F350 trucks, but there is no need to worry!

In this blog post, we will discuss how to troubleshoot these common transmission issues, as well as the best ways of solving them. We’ll also take a look at how often you should replace your 5R110W Transmission and if it’s safe to drive with transmission problems.

In short, you may face different problems in the 5R110W Transmission of Ford F250 or F350. Some of the common problems include- overheating transmission oil, planetary reverse assembly, or a failed transmission pump. All of them can be solved by replacing the faulty components.

Common 5R110W Transmission Problems:

The Ford 5R110W Transmission (also known as TorqShift Transmission), commonly present in F250 and Ford F350 trucks, often experience issues and problems. This may cause some issues while driving the truck, so you need to have detailed knowledge about these problems. Here are some of the common transmission problems with Ford F250 and Ford F350 trucks:

Reverse Planetary Assembly Problems

If you experience this problem, the reverse gear will only work if the vehicle is moving at a very slow speed. If your truck’s transmission has Planetary Assembly Problems and you can’t get it fixed immediately, don’t worry! You can still drive the truck in forwarding or neutral gears. However, we would recommend that you avoid driving with Reverse Gear until it is properly repaired by an expert mechanic.

Failing Transmission Pump

This problem is often seen in Ford F250 and Ford F350 trucks. The transmission pump present inside the TorqShift Transmission can sometimes fail, causing issues such as lack of pressure to shift gears or even some minor problems like slipping gears. If your truck’s pump fails, we would recommend that you take it to a trusted mechanic right away for repair.

Transmission Fluid Overheating

If you notice signs of overheated fluid while driving your car, then there might be an issue with the cooling system of your vehicle which further leads to failing TorqShift Transmission Gears. This is one serious problem and if not taken care of soon enough, this may cause irreversible damage to other parts within the transmission too!

Faulty Shift Solenoids

These solenoids are responsible for controlling the TorqShift Transmission Gears. If there is a problem with any of these solenoids, they may not be able to switch gears properly and you will experience ‘jerky’ shifting at times too!

A faulty shift solenoid happens due to a lack of oil supply to these solenoids, which is a pretty common problem with Ford F250 and Ford F350 trucks. Also, it may happen if the solenoid is overheating or vibrating too much. The plunger mechanisms present inside the solenoids may also wear out over time, causing similar problems.

Failed Forward Clutch Drum

This is a very serious problem and can cause irreversible damage to your Ford F250 or Ford F350 truck. A failed forward clutch drum means that the drum has worn out and there may be other problems too, such as:

– Damaged Clutch Plate Assembly

– Damaged TorqShift Transmission Gears

Other than design flaws, a premature forward clutch drum failure may happen due to a lack of oil supply, which is usually the result of excessive heat. If the TorqShift transmission gears are overheating, it may damage other parts within the transmission too.

How to Solve 5R110W Transmission Problems?

There are a number of ways to troubleshoot and fix the problems mentioned above. Below, we will discuss them in detail-

Solving Reverse Planetary Assembly Problems

In order to fix this problem, you will need a Transmission Jack and the TorqShift Assembly. First, lift up your truck from its rear end using the transmission jack and then remove both rear wheels of the car. The next step is to take out all four bolts present inside each axle housing.

Now, place a block behind the drive shaft so that it stays in position when disconnected from TorqShift’s output flange. You can now disconnect this by loosening or removing two nuts on either side of brake lines which are connected to axle tubes via rubber boots (axle tube-to-brake line connections).

Once done with this step, simply lift up your truck’s tailgate along with the TorqShift Transmission assembly but don’t pull upwards past the vertical position as doing so might damage parts within the transmission too severely!

Solving A Failing Transmission Pump

In order to solve a failing transmission pump in Ford F250 or F350, you need to replace the transmission pump. For that, you will need a TorqShift Transmission Pump Replacement Kit.

In order to remove the old transmission pump, you must first disconnect both metal lines attached to it and then take off its two bolts from either side of the reservoir tank. Now simply pull out this assembly for removing your failing transmission pump!

Once you’re done removing the failing transmission pump, time to install a new one. Install the new transmission pump by inserting its bolts on either side of the reservoir tank. Finally, reconnect both metal lines to your newly installed TorqShift Transmission Pump and everything should be fine now!

Solving Transmission Fluid Overheating Problem

In order to solve the transmission fluid overheating problem, you need to replace your TorqShift Transmission Fluid. You can also install a TransGo Ford TR-3650 Universal Tri-Fluid Additive in place of replacing the whole unit!

This product is specifically designed for Ford models and it works by adding extra friction modifiers inside the transmission fluid. This will not only increase its viscosity but also help in lowering down both heat buildup as well as wear & tear within this part too! This means that there are fewer chances of any problems arising with regards to either shifting hard or slipping gears from now on.

Solving Faulty Shift Solenoids

The best way to solve a faulty shift solenoid is to replace it. To replace the 5R10W Shift Solenoid, you’ll need a TorqShift Solenoid Replacement Kit.

The first step is to remove the electric connector. Then remove the E clip holding the solenoid in place. Then, slide the solenoid out and install a new solenoid in reverse order.

If the solenoid is too tight, use one hand to lightly tap on the snout of the solenoid while using the other to apply pressure at the body of the solenoid. Reinstall both electrical connectors and E clips after you’re done.

There may be a group of pressure sensors in the solenoid body; they’re only used as plugs and shouldn’t worry you if they aren’t connected to the harness. The pressure sensors in early TorqShift transmission wiring harnesses will be connected, but those in later transmissions will not.

Solving Failed Forward Clutch Drum

If you are experiencing any problems with your forward clutch drum in Ford F250 or even the entire unit, then all you need is to replace it. This can be done by simply removing TorqShift’s front bearing retainer and pulling out both input gear shafts along with their attached components.

Once this step has been completed successfully, time to install a new one! The next step is pretty simple; just slide in two bearings (one on each input gear) into their respective slots inside of TorqShift’s case cover followed by attaching an output brake band onto the backside of the primary drive assembly using a retaining pin provided within the kit itself!

Now place the assembled housing over splines present at the front end of the transmission main shaft after installing the front bearing retainer back into place. Once you’re done with that, you can restart your truck and run a test drive.

If you are still not sure about how to solve your transmission problem, then hiring professionals is the best option available for you at this point. Common problems like slipping gears, lack of power, and rough shifting can be taken care of by professional mechanics only!

Can I Drive A Ford F250 With Transmission Problems?

Yes, it is possible but only on an emergency basis. Make sure that you follow all safety precautions while driving your car with transmission problems and avoid sudden braking as much as possible so that the transmission gets enough time to switch gears smoothly.

Remember, even though repairing these kinds of issues are not a very difficult task, they still require special attention and care from experienced professionals who have years of experience dealing with complicated automobile repairs.

How Often Does an F250 Transmission Need To Be Replaced?

The 5R110W or TorqShift transmission usually lasts for between 130k & 200k miles, but if you are planning on transitioning between gears smoothly, then it is recommended that you replace your Ford F250 Transmission every 100,000 miles.

However, if you experience any other problems like slipping or lack of power while accelerating the vehicle at higher speeds than usual, then replacing its transmission immediately will be a wise decision to make!

Bottom Line

Transmission problems are pretty serious, and it’s important to have a good idea about these problems to make sure that the problem is solved right away without causing any further issues.
